Hair Mask vs. Conditioner: What Is the Difference?

Hair & Body Beauty Supply · October 19, 2026

Conditioners and hair masks look alike in the jar, and both go on after shampoo. The difference is how concentrated they are and how long they stay on the hair.

What a conditioner does

Conditioner is the everyday step after shampoo. Shampoo lifts the hair cuticle slightly as it cleans; conditioner smooths it back down, makes detangling easier, reduces static and adds softness. It works in one to three minutes and is used every time you wash.

What a hair mask does

A hair mask is a more concentrated treatment, with a higher amount of oils, butters, proteins or amino acids. It stays on longer, usually 5 to 20 minutes, to deliver deeper nourishment or repair. Most people use a mask once or twice a week, or more often if the hair is very dry or chemically treated.

What is a conditioner + mask (2-in-1)?

Many professional lines, including Mirra Professional Elements and BioRestore, offer a Cond + Mask: a single product that works as a quick conditioner when rinsed after a few minutes, or as a mask when left on longer. It is a practical choice if you want one product for both steps.

How to choose

How to apply a mask

  1. Shampoo and gently squeeze out the excess water.
  2. Apply the mask to the lengths and ends, section by section.
  3. Comb through with a wide-tooth comb so every strand is coated.
  4. Leave it on for the time on the label, then rinse thoroughly.
  5. Finish with a leave-in if your hair needs extra protection.
